Finasteride 1mg + Minoxidil 3mg Capsule

What is Finasteride + Minoxidil Used For?

Finasteride + Minoxidil is a medication used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in adult men. It helps slow hair loss and may promote hair regrowth.

How Does Finasteride + Minoxidil Work?

Finasteride works by blocking the production of a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is responsible for hair thinning and loss. By lowering DHT levels, it helps maintain and improve hair growth. Minoxidil works by increasing blood flow to hair follicles, helping to stimulate and prolong the hair growth cycle. It can enhance hair thickness and prevent further hair loss over time.

How to Take Finasteride + Minoxidil

  • Take one capsule once daily, with or without food.
  • Try to take it at the same time every day to maintain consistency.
  • Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew it.
  • It may take at least 3 to 6 months before you see noticeable results.
  • Continue taking Finasteride + Minoxidil to maintain benefits – stopping the medication may lead to hair loss resuming within 6 to 12 months.

What If You Miss a Dose?

  • If you forget a dose, skip it and take your next dose as scheduled.
  • Do not take two doses at the same time.

Possible Side Effects & What to Watch For

Most people tolerate Finasteride + Minoxidil well, but some may experience side effects, including:

Common Side Effects:

  • Sexual effects – lower sex drive, difficulty getting an erection, decreased semen production (these may persist even after stopping the medication).
  • Breast changes – swelling, tenderness, lumps, or nipple discharge (report these to your doctor).
  • Testicular pain
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • Increased hair growth in unwanted areas (such as the face or arms).
  • Fluid retention, mild swelling in the hands and feet.

Serious Side Effects – Seek Medical Help If You Experience:

  • Severe mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts - there have been associations with finasteride usage and mental health disorders, including depression. It is not clear if finasteride actually causes these conditions. If you experience any changes in mood or behavior, it is important to seek medical advice from your primary care provider.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction – swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; rash; itching
  • Unusual muscle pain, weakness, or injury
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat.
  • Severe swelling of the hands, feet, or face.
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • Chest pain or palpitations.

A note on finasteride and side effects: There have been numerous studies done on the safety profile of finasteride over the decades and generally the findings are that it is safe and well tolerated by most patients. A number of multicentre studies demonstrated that 1.7% of men treated with finasteride developed side effects compared to 2.1% of men treated with placebo. Within these studies, the most common side effects were decreased libido (1.8%), erectile dysfunction (1.3%), and ejaculation disorder (1.2%). Resolution of these side effects occurred in all men who discontinued therapy and in most who continued therapy. The incidence of each of the above side effects decreased to less than 0.3% by the fifth year of treatment. Finasteride is metabolized by the liver, so it is not recommended to be used in individuals with abnormal liver function.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Not for use in women or children – Finasteride can cause birth defects if handled by pregnant women.
    • If a pregnant woman accidentally handles a broken tablet, she should wash the area immediately and contact a healthcare provider.
  • Men taking Finasteride may require PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood tests to screen for prostate cancer, as Finasteride can alter PSA levels.
  • Monitor for breast changes – Any lumps, pain, or nipple discharge should be reported to your doctor.
  • Minoxidil is a vasodilator and may lower blood pressure. Use caution if you have a history of low blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney disease.
    • Avoid taking other medications that lower blood pressure unless directed by your doctor.
  • If you experience dizziness or fainting , consult your healthcare provider.
    • Avoid alcohol, as it may increase dizziness.
  • If a capsule cracks and leaks, avoid skin contact. If contact occurs, wash the area immediately with soap and water
  • Hair shedding can occur when using finasteride, particularly in the early stages of treatment. This is a common experience for many individuals starting on medications like finasteride. The reason for this shedding is that finasteride works by inhibiting the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to hair thinning and loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride can shift hair follicles from the resting phase (telogen) to the growing phase (anagen). As the new anagen hairs begin to grow, they push out the older hairs, leading to an initial increase in hair shedding. This process is sometimes referred to as "telogen effluvium."This type of shedding is generally temporary and should subside within a few months as the hair growth cycle stabilizes. Most users notice that this initial increase in hair shedding diminishes significantly within 3 to 6 months of starting the treatment. It's important to continue the medication despite the initial shedding, as this is typically a sign that the treatment is beginning to work
  • Speak with your doctor if you experience any concerning symptoms.
